It is getting much more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all dwell in. Whether you are making baseball bats or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to make them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are making a superior item? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the motto and the word of choice for many people and companies. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the object is to build a good, high value part and to make it of high value to your clients. The producers of the items do not determine what they makes’ value; the buyer does. What is the buyer willing to pay for your product and how big of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to boost your earnings for your goods.

You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can raise profits and keep your organization working lean and efficiently. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your company. Waste comes innumerous forms and it costs every business more money than they would care to confess. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a vendor. These are process issues that can directly have an effect on the end product and the quantity that you can make. When workers are sitting around, unused and waiting for the work to come to their area, they are not useful. They are under used and are in effect just wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting quiet. What is the point of having a costly automatic machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and buy a piece of equipment that will be more productive? What about the space that the machine is taking up, could another work area be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you might need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is old, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the development and profit of theorganization. It can be uncomfortable to admit that getting that equipment was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the company, then it is time to push on and discover something that does. It is called adapting and going ahead.
