It is becoming more and harder to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are making motorcycles or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to build them less expensively and faster than you. But the question is if they are producing a superior product? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is weird and regrettable, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many consumers and companies. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the object is to produce a superior, high quality product and to make it of high value to your potential customers. The producers of the items do not decide what they makes’ value; the buyer does. What is the customer ready to pay for your item and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to boost your earnings for your product.

You can always raise the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can boost profits and keep your organization working lean and efficiently. It all begins with eliminating unnecessary waste in all aspects of your organization. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every organization more cash than they would care to disclose. Waste is when workers are just hanging around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the assembly department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a vendor. These are process concerns that can directly affect the end product and the speed at which you can produce. When workers are sitting around, idle and waiting for the job to come to their area, they are not useful. They are unused and are in essence just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines being quiet. What is the point of having a expensive automated machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the process by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more fruitful? What about the area that the equipment is filling, could another work spot be put there and more work actually be completed without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you might need it. If you are not using it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thefirm. It can be uncomfortable to admit that buying that robot was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t help grow the business, then it is time to move forward and find something that does. It is called adapting and moving forward.
