It is becoming more and more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are producing baseball bats or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to produce them cheaper and faster than you. But the question is if they are making a superior product? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is bizarre and regrettable, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many consumers and businesses. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t always work out for the best. So the objective is to produce a good, high value item and to make it of high worth to your clients. The makers of the items do not decide what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the buyer ready to pay for your item and how big of a demand for your item is there? There are different ways to boost your revenue for your goods.
You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a longer term way that can raise earnings and keep your business running lean and efficiently. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all aspects of your company. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every business more money than they would care to confess. Waste is when employees are just hanging around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the electrical department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are method problems that can directly affect the end product and the speed at which you can make. When workers are hanging around, unused and waiting for the job to come to their area, they are not producing. They are under used and are in essence simply wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting idle. What is the point of having a fancy automated machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more industrious? What about the area that the equipment is taking up, could another work spot be put there and more work actually be completed without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you may want it. If you are not using it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the growth and profit of theorganization. It can be tricky to admit that getting that machine was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t help build the business, then it is time to move forward and realize something that does. It is called adapting and going forward.
