It is becoming much more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are building motorcycles or widgets, there is someone out there trying to build them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are making a superior part? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is weird and regrettable, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many people and businesses. Yes, cheaper is better, but less expensive doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the object is to build a superior, high quality product and to make it of high worth to your customers. The builders of the parts do not decide what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the consumer willing to pay for your part and how big of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your goods.

You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a more long term method that can increase earnings and keep your business working lean and efficient. It all starts with removing unnecessary waste in all parts of your organization. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every company more cash than they would care to disclose. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be built. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are procedure concerns that can directly affect the end product and how many you can make. When employees are hanging around, unused and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not useful. They are unused and are in essence merely wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines being quiet. What is the point of having a expensive mechanized machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and buy a piece of equipment that will be more productive? What about the area that the equipment is taking up, could another work area be put there and more labor actually be done without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of equipment because you may need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up room and not contributing to the growth and profit of the company. It can be tricky to admit that purchasing that machine was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t assit build the company, then it is time to move forward and discover something that does. It is titles adapting and going forward.
