It is getting much tougher to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are making motorcycles or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to build them less expensively and faster than you. But the question is if they are producing a better item? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is bizarre and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many buyers and companies. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the objective is to produce a superior, high quality item and to make it of high value to your buyers. The builders of the items do not determine what they makes’ worth; the customer does. What is the consumer prepared to pay for your product and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to increase your earnings for your goods.
You can always raise the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a longer term way that can boost profits and keep your company operating lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all aspects of your business. Waste comes innumerous forms and it costs every business more cash than they would care to disclose. Waste is when workers are just hanging around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It might just mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the electrical department or it might mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are process concerns that can directly influence the end product and how many you can make. When employees are hanging around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their work station, they are not productive. They are idle and are in essence just wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines standing unused. What is the point of having a costly automatic machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of equipment that will be more productive? What about the room that the equipment is filling, could another work area be put there and more jobs actually be finished without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of equipment because you may need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of theorganization. It can be tricky to admit that purchasing that equipment was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t assit grow the company, then it is time to move on and find something that does. It is titles adapting and going forward.
