It is getting more and harder to compete in the global marketplace that we all dwell in. Whether you are producing cars or widgets, there is someone out there trying to produce them less expensively and faster than you. But the question is if they are producing a better item? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the catchphrase and the word of choice for many people and organizations. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the objective is to produce a good, high quality part and to make it of high worth to your potential customers. The makers of the items do not establish what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the buyer willing to pay for your part and how much of a demand for your item is there? There are different ways to increase your earnings for your product.

You can always increase the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a longer term method that can raise earnings and keep your business running lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all aspects of your organization. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every business more revenue than they would care to confess. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It might just mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are method problems that can directly affect the end product and how many you can produce. When employees are hanging around, idle and waiting for the work to come to their area, they are not useful. They are under used and are in essence merely wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines being unused. What is the point of having a fancy automated machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of machinery that will be more fruitful? What about the area that the equipment is filling, could another work station be put there and more jobs actually be done without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of tools because you might need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up room and not contributing to the growth and profit of thefirm. It can be uncomfortable to admit that purchasing that equipment was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the company, then it is time to push forward and realize something that does. It is named adapting and pushing forward.
