It is becoming much more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are making hair dryers or widgets, there is someone out there trying to make them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are building a better product? For some consumers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the catchphrase and the word of choice for many buyers and companies. Yes, less expensive is better, but cheaper doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the object is to make a superior, high quality item and to make it of high value to your buyers. The producers of the product do not decide what they makes’ value; the consumer does. What is the customer ready to pay for your item and how big of a demand for your part is there? There are different ways to raise your profit for your goods.

You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a longer term way that can raise profits and keep your company running lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all parts of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every business more money than they would care to admit. Waste is when employees are just hanging around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are process issues that can directly influence the end product and how many you can make. When workers are loafing around, inactive and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not producing. They are under used and are in essence just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting quiet. What is the point of having a expensive mechanized machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the process by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of equipment that will be more industrious? What about the room that the equipment is taking up, could another work spot be put there and more labor actually be finished without the robot? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of equipment because you may need it. If you are not making use of it or it is outdated, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the development and profit of thefirm. It can be difficult to admit that purchasing that machine was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t help build the company, then it is time to move forward and find something that does. It is named adapting and going forward.
