It is becoming much harder to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are producing hair dryers or widgets, there is someone out there trying to build them cheaper and faster than you. But the question is if they are building a superior product? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is bizarre and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many people and businesses. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the objective is to build a good, high quality product and to make it of high worth to your customers. The makers of the parts do not determine what they makes’ value; the consumer does. What is the customer prepared to pay for your product and how big of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to increase your profit for your product.

You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a longer term way that can raise revenue and keep your company working lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all parts of your company. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every organization more revenue than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It might just mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the electrical department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a vendor. These are method problems that can directly have an effect on the end product and the speed at which you can make. When workers are loafing around, idle and waiting for the job to come to their work station, they are not useful. They are under used and are in essence simply wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines standing unused. What is the point of having a costly automated machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of machinery that will be more industrious? What about the area that the equipment is filling, could another work station be put there and more labor actually be completed without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of equipment because you might need it. If you are not using it or it is old, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the growth and profit of thebusiness. It can be tricky to admit that getting that equipment was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help grow the company, then it is time to move forward and discover something that does. It is titles adapting and pushing ahead.
