It is becoming much more difficult to compete in the global marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are making baseball bats or widgets, there is someone out there trying to produce them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are building a superior item? For some consumers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many consumers and companies. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the object is to produce a first-rate, high quality part and to make it of high value to your clients. The producers of the items do not establish what they makes’ value; the consumer does. What is the consumer prepared to pay for your part and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to raise your profit for your goods.

You can always raise the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a longer term method that can increase earnings and keep your organization working lean and efficient. It all begins with eliminating unnecessary waste in all areas of your company. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every company more revenue than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the assembly department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a vendor. These are process issues that can directly influence the end product and how many you can produce. When employees are sitting around, idle and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not useful. They are under used and are in effect just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting idle. What is the point of having a fancy automated machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the job by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more productive? What about the room that the equipment is filling, could another work spot be put there and more work actually be completed without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with tools because you might need it. If you are not making use of it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the growth and profit of thebusiness. It can be hard to admit that purchasing that equipment was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help grow the company, then it is time to move forward and find something that does. It is named adapting and pushing ahead.
