It is getting much tougher to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are producing hair dryers or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to build them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are producing a superior item? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many people and businesses. Yes, less expensive is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the objective is to make a first-rate, high quality part and to make it of high worth to your buyers. The makers of the parts do not determine what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the buyer prepared to pay for your service and how big of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your product.
You can always increase the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a more long term method that can raise revenue and keep your company running lean and efficient. It all starts with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your company. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every organization more revenue than they would care to disclose. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are method concerns that can directly have an effect on the end product and the quantity that you can make. When workers are hanging around, idle and waiting for the job to come to their station, they are not producing. They are idle and are in effect simply wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting quiet. What is the point of having a fancy automated machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the process by hand, sell the machine and buy a piece of equipment that will be more fruitful? What about the space that the equipment is taking up, could another work area be put there and more labor actually be done without the robot? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of equipment because you may need it. If you are not using it or it is old, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thefirm. It can be difficult to admit that buying that machine was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t assit build the business, then it is time to move on and realize something that does. It is named adapting and going forward.
