It is getting more and more difficult to compete in the global marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are building hair dryers or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to build them cheaper and faster than you. But the question is if they are building a better part? For some consumers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many buyers and organizations. Yes, less expensive is better, but cheaper doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the object is to make a good, high quality item and to make it of high worth to your buyers. The builders of the items do not decide what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the consumer prepared to pay for your part and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to raise your profit for your product.
You can always raise the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can raise revenue and keep your business working lean and efficient. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all aspects of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every business more money than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the assembly department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a vendor. These are method issues that can directly influence the end product and the quantity that you can make. When workers are hanging around, inactive and waiting for the work to come to their area, they are not productive. They are idle and are in essence just wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines being idle. What is the point of having a expensive automated machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of machinery that will be more fruitful? What about the room that the machine is filling, could another work station be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the robot? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of parts because you may want it. If you are not utilizing it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the growth and profit of the company. It can be hard to admit that buying that robot was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t assit build the company, then it is time to move on and find something that does. It is titles adapting and moving ahead.
