It is becoming much tougher to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are building motorcycles or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to produce them cheaper and faster than you. But the question is if they are building a superior item? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the motto and the word of choice for many consumers and organizations. Yes, cheaper is better, but less expensive doesn’t always work out for the best. So the object is to build a first-rate, high value product and to make it of high value to your clients. The producers of the product do not determine what they makes’ value; the buyer does. What is the customer prepared to pay for your item and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your product.

You can always increase the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can increase profits and keep your company operating lean and efficient. It all starts with removing unnecessary waste in all aspects of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every organization more revenue than they would care to disclose. Waste is when employees are just hanging around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are procedure issues that can directly affect the end product and how many you can make. When employees are loafing around, unused and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not useful. They are under used and are in effect simply wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines standing unused. What is the point of having a expensive automated machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and buy a piece of equipment that will be more fruitful? What about the room that the equipment is filling, could another work area be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with something because you may need it. If you are not using it or it is old, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the growth and profit of thebusiness. It can be hard to admit that buying that machine was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the company, then it is time to push on and realize something that does.
