It is becoming much tougher to compete in the global marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are producing hair dryers or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to build them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are building a better part? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is strange and regrettable, but cheaper has become the motto and the word of choice for many buyers and organizations. Yes, cheaper is better, but less expensive doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the objective is to produce a superior, high value product and to make it of high worth to your potential customers. The producers of the product do not establish what they makes’ worth; the customer does. What is the consumer willing to pay for your part and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to increase your profit for your product.

You can always increase the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a longer term approach that can raise profits and keep your organization running lean and efficiently. It all starts with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your business. Waste comes innumerous forms and it costs every business more money than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the assembly department or it could mean that they are waiting for parts from a supplier. These are method concerns that can directly have an effect on the end product and the speed at which you can make. When workers are sitting around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their area, they are not useful. They are unused and are in effect merely wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting quiet. What is the point of having a costly mechanized machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of equipment that will be more industrious? What about the space that the machine is taking up, could another work spot be put there and more work actually be done without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with tools because you may need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thebusiness. It can be hard to admit that purchasing that robot was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t assit grow the company, then it is time to push forward and find something that does. It is named adapting and pushing forward.
