It is getting much tougher to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all dwell in. Whether you are producing hair dryers or widgets, there is someone out there trying to produce them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are building a better product? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many consumers and organizations. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the objective is to build a first-rate, high value product and to make it of high value to your customers. The producers of the parts do not establish what they makes’ value; the consumer does. What is the customer prepared to pay for your item and how big of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your product.

You can always increase the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a more long term method that can raise earnings and keep your business operating lean and efficiently. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every organization more money than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be built. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are method concerns that can directly have an effect on the end product and the quantity that you can make. When employees are sitting around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their work station, they are not productive. They are idle and are in effect just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines being quiet. What is the point of having a expensive automatic machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the process by hand, sell the robot and purchase a piece of machinery that will be more productive? What about the area that the machine is taking up, could another work spot be put there and more labor actually be finished without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you might want it. If you are not utilizing it or it is old, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thefirm. It can be difficult to admit that getting that robot was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the company, then it is time to push forward and realize something that does. It is called adapting and going forward.
