It is getting more and more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are making hair dryers or widgets, there is someone out there trying to make them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are making a superior part? For some consumers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is strange and regrettable, but cheaper has become the catchphrase and the word of choice for many consumers and organizations. Yes, less expensive is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the object is to produce a first-rate, high value item and to make it of high worth to your buyers. The producers of the parts do not determine what they makes’ value; the buyer does. What is the customer ready to pay for your product and how big of a demand for your item is there? There are different ways to increase your profit for your goods.

You can always raise the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a more long term method that can increase earnings and keep your business running lean and efficient. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all aspects of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every organization more cash than they would care to admit. Waste is when employees are just hanging around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the assembly department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are procedure problems that can directly influence the end product and how many you can make. When employees are loafing around, inactive and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not productive. They are unused and are in effect simply wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting quiet. What is the point of having a fancy mechanized machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the job by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more fruitful? What about the space that the equipment is taking up, could another work area be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the robot? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with equipment because you might need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is old, then it is taking up room and not contributing to the development and profit of theorganization. It can be uncomfortable to admit that getting that equipment was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t help build the business, then it is time to push forward and realize something that does. It is called adapting and going ahead.
