It is getting more and more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are making motorcycles or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to produce them cheaper and faster than you. But the question is if they are producing a superior product? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many consumers and businesses. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the goal is to produce a first-rate, high quality item and to make it of high worth to your clients. The builders of the items do not establish what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the consumer willing to pay for your item and how much of a demand for your item is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your product.
You can always increase the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a longer term way that can raise profits and keep your business operating lean and efficient. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your company. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every business more revenue than they would care to admit. Waste is when employees are just hanging around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a supplier. These are method problems that can directly affect the end product and the speed at which you can produce. When employees are hanging around, unused and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not producing. They are unused and are in effect simply wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines standing unused. What is the point of having a fancy mechanized machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the robot and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more industrious? What about the room that the machine is filling, could another work station be put there and more labor actually be done without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with tools because you may need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is old, then it is taking up room and not contributing to the expansion and profit of theorganization. It can be tricky to admit that buying that robot was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t help grow the business, then it is time to move on and discover something that does. It is named adapting and pushing ahead.
