It is becoming more and harder to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are building cars or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to build them cheaper and faster than you. But the question is if they are making a better part? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is strange and regrettable, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many people and companies. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the objective is to build a superior, high value product and to make it of high value to your customers. The builders of the items do not decide what they makes’ value; the consumer does. What is the buyer willing to pay for your product and how big of a demand for your item is there? There are different ways to boost your profit for your product.

You can always raise the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a longer term method that can increase revenue and keep your company running lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all areas of your business. Waste comes innumerous forms and it costs every organization more cash than they would care to admit. Waste is when employees are just hanging around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are procedure concerns that can directly have an effect on the end product and the quantity that you can produce. When employees are hanging around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their work station, they are not producing. They are unused and are in effect just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines being quiet. What is the point of having a expensive automatic machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the job by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of equipment that will be more productive? What about the space that the machine is filling, could another work area be put there and more work actually be done without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of tools because you may need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up room and not contributing to the growth and profit of thebusiness. It can be hard to admit that purchasing that machine was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the business, then it is time to push forward and find something that does. It is named adapting and going forward.
