It is becoming more and harder to compete in the global marketplace that we all dwell in. Whether you are building cars or widgets, there is someone out there trying to build them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are producing a better product? For some consumers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is weird and regrettable, but cheaper has become the catchphrase and the word of choice for many buyers and companies. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t always work out for the best. So the goal is to produce a good, high value product and to make it of high value to your clients. The producers of the product do not establish what they makes’ worth; the consumer does. What is the customer willing to pay for your item and how big of a demand for your part is there? There are different ways to raise your profit for your goods.
You can always increase the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can boost earnings and keep your business running lean and efficiently. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all aspects of your company. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every organization more money than they would care to confess. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are method issues that can directly have an effect on the end product and how many you can produce. When workers are loafing around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their station, they are not useful. They are idle and are in effect just wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting idle. What is the point of having a costly automatic machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and buy a piece of equipment that will be more industrious? What about the area that the machine is filling, could another work station be put there and more labor actually be done without the robot? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with equipment because you might want it. If you are not making use of it or it is outdated, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thebusiness. It can be difficult to admit that buying that robot was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help grow the company, then it is time to push forward and discover something that does. It is named adapting and going forward.
