It is getting much tougher to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are producing hair dryers or widgets, there is someone out there trying to produce them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are producing a superior part? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the motto and the word of choice for many people and businesses. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the objective is to produce a superior, high quality part and to make it of high value to your potential customers. The makers of the parts do not decide what they makes’ value; the buyer does. What is the buyer ready to pay for your item and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to increase your profit for your product.
You can always raise the price and pass it off to the consumer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can increase profits and keep your business working lean and efficiently. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all parts of your business. Waste comes innumerous forms and it costs every organization more cash than they would care to disclose. Waste is when workers are just hanging around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It might just mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the assembly department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are method problems that can directly influence the end product and how many you can make. When workers are hanging around, unused and waiting for the work to come to their work station, they are not productive. They are idle and are in essence just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines standing unused. What is the point of having a costly mechanized machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the robot and purchase a piece of machinery that will be more productive? What about the space that the machine is filling, could another work spot be put there and more labor actually be finished without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of equipment because you might need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is old, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the growth and profit of thebusiness. It can be difficult to admit that purchasing that machine was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t assit grow the business, then it is time to push forward and find something that does. It is named adapting and moving forward.
