It is getting more and harder to compete in the global marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are making baseball bats or widgets, there is someone out there trying to build them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are producing a superior item? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the motto and the word of choice for many people and companies. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t always work out for the best. So the object is to produce a superior, high value item and to make it of high value to your clients. The producers of the product do not decide what they makes’ worth; the consumer does. What is the consumer ready to pay for your service and how big of a demand for your item is there? There are different ways to increase your revenue for your product.

You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a longer term method that can raise revenue and keep your business working lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all areas of your company. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every company more revenue than they would care to admit. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for parts from a supplier. These are method problems that can directly affect the end product and how many you can make. When workers are sitting around, idle and waiting for the job to come to their station, they are not useful. They are idle and are in essence simply wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines being idle. What is the point of having a expensive mechanized machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more productive? What about the space that the equipment is taking up, could another work station be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of parts because you may want it. If you are not making use of it or it is obsolete, then it is taking up room and not contributing to the expansion and profit of theorganization. It can be tricky to admit that getting that machine was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t assit grow the business, then it is time to move forward and discover something that does. It is called adapting and moving ahead.
