It is becoming much tougher to compete in the global marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are making cars or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to produce them cheaper and quicker than you. But the question is if they are building a better product? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is weird and regrettable, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many consumers and businesses. Yes, less expensive is better, but less expensive doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the object is to make a superior, high quality item and to make it of high value to your potential customers. The producers of the product do not decide what they makes’ value; the buyer does. What is the buyer prepared to pay for your product and how much of a demand for your part is there? There are different ways to raise your profit for your goods.
You can always raise the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a more long term method that can boost profits and keep your organization working lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all aspects of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every company more revenue than they would care to admit. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It might just mean that they are waiting for parts to be completed in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are process issues that can directly affect the end product and how many you can produce. When employees are hanging around, idle and waiting for the job to come to their station, they are not productive. They are idle and are in effect just wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines being quiet. What is the point of having a costly automatic machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the robot and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more fruitful? What about the area that the equipment is filling, could another work spot be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you might want it. If you are not making use of it or it is old, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the growth and profit of thebusiness. It can be uncomfortable to admit that getting that equipment was a bad idea, but if it does not and doesn’t assit grow the company, then it is time to push forward and find something that does. It is called adapting and pushing forward.
