It is getting much tougher to compete in the global marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are building cars or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to produce them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are producing a superior product? For some consumers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the part doesn’t last as long. It is strange and regrettable, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many buyers and organizations. Yes, less expensive is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the goal is to make a superior, high quality product and to make it of high value to your clients. The makers of the items do not decide what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the buyer prepared to pay for your product and how much of a demand for your part is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your product.
You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a longer term method that can increase profits and keep your business running lean and efficient. It all starts with eliminating unnecessary waste in all aspects of your organization. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every organization more money than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just hanging around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a supplier. These are procedure problems that can directly influence the end product and the quantity that you can make. When workers are loafing around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their work station, they are not productive. They are under used and are in effect merely wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting unused. What is the point of having a costly mechanized machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the process by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of machinery that will be more fruitful? What about the area that the machine is filling, could another work spot be put there and more labor actually be completed without the robot? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with something because you might need it. If you are not using it or it is old, then it is taking up valuable space and not contributing to the growth and profit of theorganization. It can be tricky to admit that buying that equipment was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t assit grow the company, then it is time to move on and find something that does. It is named adapting and going forward.
