It is getting more and more difficult to compete in the global marketplace that we all live in. Whether you are building cars or widgets, there is someone out there trying to build them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are making a superior item? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the product doesn’t last as long. It is strange and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the slogan and the word of choice for many buyers and organizations. Yes, less expensive is better, but cheaper doesn’t always work out for the best. So the goal is to produce a superior, high quality part and to make it of high value to your buyers. The makers of the parts do not determine what they makes’ value; the customer does. What is the consumer willing to pay for your service and how much of a demand for your part is there? There are different ways to raise your earnings for your goods.

You can always raise the price and pass it off to the buyer. But there is a better way, a longer term way that can raise earnings and keep your company working lean and efficient. It all begins with eliminating unnecessary waste in all areas of your business. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every company more revenue than they would care to disclose. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be filled. It mightmerely mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the assembly department or it could mean that they are waiting for product from a vendor. These are procedure issues that can directly affect the end product and the quantity that you can produce. When employees are hanging around, inactive and waiting for the work to come to their work station, they are not productive. They are unused and are in essence just wasting money and time. It is the same when you have machines standing quiet. What is the point of having a fancy automated machine if it is not in use for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of equipment that will be more industrious? What about the room that the equipment is filling, could another work area be put there and more jobs actually be completed without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to do away with parts because you may need it. If you are not using it or it is outdated, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the growth and profit of theorganization. It can be difficult to admit that purchasing that machine was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the business, then it is time to move on and discover something that does. It is called adapting and going ahead.
