It is becoming more and more difficult to compete in the worldwide marketplace that we all exist in. Whether you are building baseball bats or widgets, there is somebody out there trying to make them less expensively and quicker than you. But the question is if they are making a superior item? For some people, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is good enough even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the motto and the word of choice for many buyers and organizations. Yes, cheaper is better, but less expensive doesn’t always work out for the best. So the object is to build a first-rate, high value part and to make it of high worth to your potential customers. The makers of the product do not decide what they makes’ worth; the buyer does. What is the buyer ready to pay for your part and how big of a demand for your part is there? There are different ways to increase your revenue for your goods.
You can always elevate the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a longer term method that can raise earnings and keep your company running lean and efficiently. It all starts with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your organization. Waste comes inlots of forms and it costs every organization more money than they would care to admit. Waste is when workers are just standing around, but that does not mean that there aren’t orders to be made. It mightsimply mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the assembly department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are procedure concerns that can directly have an effect on the end product and the quantity that you can produce. When workers are loafing around, unused and waiting for the work to come to their station, they are not productive. They are under used and are in essence just wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines sitting unused. What is the point of having a fancy automatic machine if it is not being used for hours a day? Would it be more efficient to do the job by hand, sell the machine and purchase a piece of machinery that will be more productive? What about the room that the equipment is taking up, could another work spot be put there and more work actually be completed without the machine? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you may want it. If you are not using it or it is old, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thefirm. It can be tricky to admit that purchasing that equipment was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t help build the business, then it is time to move forward and find something that does. It is named adapting and moving forward.
