It is getting more and harder to compete in the global marketplace that we all dwell in. Whether you are producing hair dryers or widgets, there is someone out there trying to produce them less expensively and faster than you. But the question is if they are building a better item? For some buyers, it doesn’t matter, cheaper is better even if the item doesn’t last as long. It is weird and unfortunate, but cheaper has become the catchphrase and the word of choice for many buyers and businesses. Yes, cheaper is better, but cheaper doesn’t necessarily work out for the best. So the objective is to produce a first-rate, high value item and to make it of high worth to your buyers. The producers of the product do not establish what they makes’ worth; the customer does. What is the buyer prepared to pay for your product and how much of a demand for your product is there? There are different ways to boost your profit for your product.

You can always increase the price and pass it off to the customer. But there is a better way, a more long term way that can raise revenue and keep your company working lean and efficiently. It all begins with removing unnecessary waste in all areas of your company. Waste comes in many forms and it costs every company more cash than they would care to confess. Waste is when employees are just standing around, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t orders to be built. It might just mean that they are waiting for parts to be finished in the painting department or it might mean that they are waiting for parts from a vendor. These are process problems that can directly have an effect on the end product and the quantity that you can make. When employees are sitting around, inactive and waiting for the job to come to their station, they are not useful. They are unused and are in effect simply wasting cash and time. It is the same when you have machines being unused. What is the point of having a expensive mechanized machine if it is not being run for hours a day? Would it be more cost effective to do the job by hand, sell the robot and buy a piece of machinery that will be more industrious? What about the area that the equipment is taking up, could another work station be put there and more labor actually be done without the equipment? You can’t say that you don’t want to get rid of something because you may need it. If you are not utilizing it or it is outdated, then it is taking up space and not contributing to the expansion and profit of thebusiness. It can be tricky to admit that getting that robot was a bad idea, but if it doesn’t work and doesn’t assit grow the company, then it is time to push forward and discover something that does. It is named adapting and pushing ahead.
