Jan 18 2012

Perhaps you are considering Six Sigma as a way of creating the improvements and changes that you are hoping to make in your business structure. Or perhaps you have just heard about Six Sigma for the very first time and you want to find out more about what it is and how you can use it to make your business rise to the top of the pile.

business people One thing is for sure you will want to do more than a few Google searches in order to gather information. 6 Sigma has been around since the early 80's and was created by Bill Smith of the Motorola company as a way to improve a company's bottom line by simply improving the quality of whatever that company is improving. The theory behind it is that improving the quality of the product would in turn improve the customer's experience and would thus improve that company's bottom line...and it worked.

Of course, just as with anything else that has been around a while there are loads of informational websites out there wanting you to take their Six sigma certification course or to purchase their products or materials and this is where things start to go awry. When you are looking to gather information about a topic such as this it is best to click on the news tab or to actually find books and business publications that talk specifically about the implementation of the Six Sigma strategies and which specific training courses are the best ones on the market.

Many websites try to make themselves seem like the authority on a particular topic and this is very much the case with Six Sigma websites as well. Online resources can be wonderful places to gather information but read carefully because many times you will notice discrepancies from one site to another and if you aren't careful you could base your conclusions about six sigma on information that is untrue or askew for the purpose of directing you to purchase a specific item.

Online research can be helpful and informative but it is important to make sure that you pay careful attention to where this information is coming from. Remember you information about Six Sigma will only be as accurate as your resources are.

Six sigma is one of the few business management-training programs that can be taken online or in the classroom setting and the wonderful thing is that both offer many benefits to the individuals that choose each method of training. Selecting which mode of training will work best is a decision that the management and staff of a company should work on figuring out together.

six sigma training Classroom training is of course ideal for companies that either have a university nearby that is offering these classes or those that can afford to send the entire company to class together regularly. As a matter of fact, it can be a wonderful bonding experience for your entire staff when done in this way and most companies find that in addition to helping to make their team of employees more cohesive, this type of training in the classroom also helps create an increased level of understanding through the questions that are asked and answered on a variety of different topics.

When it comes to online training this is always best for the individual who wants to be completely trained from home in their spare time or company employees who can not travel either due to their integral role in the company or their family or health situation. Online training also works very well for those employees who tend to not catch onto things as quickly and these employees may benefit from spending some additional time on each level gaining a better understanding before moving on.

Most companies are choosing to offer an option to their employees and find that by doing so they are allowing the employee to select the best possible learning environment for their entire staff. Since learning is individualized and each company has its own circumstances as well it is nice to know that Six Sigma is something that can be taken in a variety of different formats to meet a wide variety of different needs of both individuals and companies alike.

No matter what type of Six Sigma training you are looking for or what type of certification program you are considering implementing with just a little bit of research, it is likely that you will find that there are many class options available in your area. The closer to home you can take your Six Sigma training the better and simpler it is to keep your company running through the training and implementation process.

Aug 26 2011

These days there is very little that you can’t get done online and schooling is no exception. From culinary classes to auto mechanics it is amazing to see how many institutions are buying into online training and certification classes and even degree based programs.

Actually it is not surprising with the busy lifestyle of the individual and the rising cost of fuel that more and more individuals are deciding to take all sorts of classes and self-improvement courses. Universities also benefit from offering these types of classes as well because there is much less overhead to running an online class and this means that they can not only turn a better overall profit but can also offer a discount to their students as well.

Certain classes lend themselves to online learning and the choice to take a class like Six Sigma in person or online is completely a personal one. Both types of learning have their advantages and disadvantages and when you are looking to take this type of class one thing that is very important to consider is the way in which you learn and process out information. In a classroom setting you get to be more interactive and ask questions and learn from the questions of others as well. For some, this enhances the learning experience while for other individuals this takes away from the information that they need to focus on.

In an online Six Sigma Certification program you are more able to spend extra time on the concepts that you personally need to understand better and learn more about. This setting tends to help the individual be able to review specific sections a few times until they really have a good grasp of the concept. Unlike the classroom setting, however, those who do 6 Sigma certification online need to be self-driven to keep pushing forward until they complete the class. The classroom makes scattered individuals more structured and focused.

Whether you are in need of Black, Green, or Yellow Belt Certification programs and whether you are looking to find online courses or find a classroom setting at the local university, gathering information about Six Sigma Certification is relatively simple. Online you will be able to find clear definitions and insights into Six Sigma and the benefits that if offers to a variety of different businesses as well as to individuals looking to enhance their resume. It is one program that will help enhance all aspects of your business knowledge for better results.

The True Understanding Of Motivating Employees

Posted by George
Aug 04 2011

A good manager is a leader. They are someone that can be looked up to and someone that is respected amongst those that they lead. Those that lead by commanding and belittling others will find that their management careers are very long lived to say the least and as a result it is likely that they will find themselves unemployed in a very short period of time.

six sigma training Being the boss and in charge, only works when your employees respect and listen to you and if they don’t well then you very simply can’t be a good manager, it is just impossible. One thing is for certain, it is much easier for a good employee to move up with a company and become a manager over time then it is for an employee to be hired into this type of position from outside of the company. Outsiders will always have a more difficult time leading an established team but this in no way means it is impossible.

Leading by example is a good way to get your employees on board. No one has much respect for a boss who thinks he is above others or one who thinks that he is too good to work side by side with his employees. A boss that earns his employees respect by pitching in to help get the job done will be one who can motivate his employees to work hard, in some cases harder than they have ever worked before.

Many people think that with a few business management classes that they can lead a group of individuals in their field, however, it is important to realize that good leaders are not made in a classroom but are born to lead and simply tend to be those who stand out above the rest. They are more than good employees because they are liked by all who know them, with few exceptions, and they are fun to work for. They are the individuals who motivate others by praise and commendations instead of by fear and ridicule. No one wants to work hard for someone who is mean and demeaning.

Management can be fun but it is up to each individual manager to find the best ways to motivate the different people that are under them. Each employee has their own unique relationship with their manager and finding what motivates each person is what separates a decent manager from a great one.

How To Know Which Six Sigma Belt Is Right for You

Posted by George
Jul 08 2011

THE SIX SIGMA PROGRAM

The Six Sigma program is a popular business-management philosophy designed to assist small companies and large corporations in maintaining consistent quality-control standards. This program, created by the Motorola Corporation in 1986, has been implemented in successful businesses all over the world.

The goal of the Six Sigma program is a simple but vitally important one: to increase company profit through a reduction of costs and a consistent, high standard of output quality. There are three official “belts” within the Six Sigma hierarchy.

THE MASTER BLACK BELT

six sigma The Master Black Belts act as mentors to the Black Belts and the Green Belts. A Master Black Belt is expected to ensure that the Six Sigma philosophies and practices are consistently, efficiently, and successfully applied by all personnel within all areas and departments of a company. Master Black Belts will often have additional tasks, such as statistical work and individual or group coaching of other employees. For them to be truly effective, the Master Black Belts should be given no job responsibilities outside of their Six Sigma duties.

THE BLACK BELT

Functioning just under the Master Black Belts are the Black Belts, who apply the Six Sigma program to individual projects rather than the company as a whole. A Black Belt will be entrusted with the task of overseeing the execution of the Six Sigma approach. For them to be truly effective, the Black Belts should be given no job responsibilities outside of their Six Sigma duties.

THE GREEN BELT

All employees that assist in applying the Six Sigma philosophy to company operations should be classified as the Green Belts. Acting as their mentors, the Black Belts routinely assist them with any Six Sigma-related questions or concerns that they might have. The Green Belts do not devote all of their time exclusively to the Six Sigma program; instead, they assist the Black Belts and the Master Black Belts in consistently maintaining the Six Sigma approach to quality control.

ADDITIONAL BELTS

Belts of additional colors, such as the Yellow Belt, have been implemented into some organizations that use the Six Sigma program. Employees who are certified as Yellow Belts are responsible for introducing other, non-certified employees to the Six Sigma methodology.

WHERE DO YOU FIT IN?

So, as an employee, which Six Sigma Belt is right for you? Has your company incorporated the Six Sigma program into its day-to-day operations?

How is Six Sigma Diffferent From Lean Process Management?

Posted by George
Jul 03 2011

Six Sigma and Lean Process Management are two popular methods businesses are using to reduce costs, increase quality, and drive profits. While the goals of both processes are very similar, and there are overlapping tools within the two methodologies, Six Sigma and Lean are different. Business users looking at these processes may have a hard time with the question, "How is Six Sigma Different from Lean?"

One of the main differences between Six Sigma and Lean are the major tools and processes for achieving improvement. One of the major tools of Six Sigma is the DMAIC project. DMAIC stands for define, measure, analyze, improve and control. When this method is utilized, project teams attempt to create a detailed definition of the process and problem, collect a baseline measurement to compare improvement to, analyze data to develop root cause and solution suggestions, implement improvement based on the data, and monitor the process to ensure control over the improvement is maintained.

Although Lean projects also desire to improve efficiencies, they do so primarily by looking for ways to reduce waste, or MUDA. Waste is any non-value action or part. Lean management looks for any part of a process that does not provide the customer with additional value, and asks if that part is absolutely necessary. If the answer is no, Lean process managers start looking for ways to remove it. Lean also looks for bottlenecks within a process, and operates on the principle that a process is only as fast as its slowest part. Therefor, a factory where all machines can produce ten units an hour, but the final labeling machine can only produce five units an hour, is only capable of producing five units an hour overall.

Despite having a few differences in tools, Six Sigma and Lean both look to improve processes on a continual basis. Either of the methods can help make a company more competitive, although each method is best applied to different areas of business. Lean works very well when applied to manufacturing and processes which involve assembly lines of any type, while Six Sigma has been applied to health care organizations with good outcomes.

The Difference Between Six Sigma And Lean Six Sigma

Posted by George
Jun 20 2011

Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma are two different things, yet they share a similar goal. Six Sigma was developed at Motorola in the early 1980s in a desperate bid to improve the company's product quality. Lean Six Sigma is the result of combining Six Sigma with another methodology known as Lean Manufacturing. Lean focuses on eliminating waste and streamlining a production process. Six Sigma, in its pure form, focuses on eliminating product defects and improving quality control. Thus, Lean Six Sigma is an attempt to combine the best of both worlds.

Six Sigma

The key terms associated with Six Sigma are the name itself, "defect" and "opportunity." A defect represents a product failing to satisfy a customer in any way. Defects are measured by opportunities. A single opportunity is the total number of chances during the production process for a defect to occur. Quality is divided into six levels, with the highest being the eponymous six sigma. To achieve six sigma, a product must have only 3.4 defects per million opportunities, an astoundingly high quality level.

Lean Manufacturing

Lean Manufacturing or simply, Lean, has one simple idea: Reduce waste and increase customer value. This idea is the foundation upon which an entire methodological structure is built. Lean 6 sigma focuses on improving the flow of products across departments, managers and employees. This flow is perceived to be critically important when it comes to providing true customer value. In the eyes of Lean, waste is created when this flow is interrupted.

Lean Six Sigma

Combining error elimination from Six Sigma with process flow from Lean yields an approach that holistically improves the company that adopts it. Implementing Six Sigma or Lean can lead to greater errors or process destruction. Both formats are necessary to improve product performance and make the company stronger. Lean Six Sigma takes the best of both methodologies and brings them into a single coherent context. This context then informs all business decisions, improving product quality and business performance and profitability.

Conclusion

Both methodologies have value on their own, but most experts recommend using Lean Six Sigma over Six Sigma or Lean by themselves. Lean makes the processes within a business flow from one stage to another efficiently. Six Sigma eliminates defects and helps the flow by removing blockages and delays.

Which six sigma belt is best for you?

Posted by George
Jun 17 2011

All four six sigma belts require that the people who earn them have certain qualities, because each belt plays a different role in the company. Each one of the belts requires training, and in order to determine which training program to undertake, people need to first examine their personalities.

six sigma belts The Yellow Belt is the first training program that introduces people to the concept of six sigma. The people most qualified for Yellow Belt training are those who know very little or even nothing about six sigma. They can also be people who have no desire to be leaders in their companies. They do not want to lead six sigma projects; they would rather be a part of the team that implements the projects. They also do not want to be mentors to anyone or decide what the six sigma projects will be.

The next belt, the Green Belt, is for people who want to devote their entire time at work to six sigma. They need to be willing to constantly learn new things about the six sigma way of doing things. They need to be involved in the six sigma process during the implementation of a project from beginning to end. They may also have the desire to move up in the ranks of management one day. Because six sigma relies so much on statistical analysis, Green Belts need to have a basic understanding of statistics.

The Black Belts are reserved for those who have begun to take on a leadership role in their companies. People who aspire to be Black Belts will be able to apply their new skills to helping their teams start six sigma projects after they have completed their training. This will mean that they desire to be the mentors in the company, helping others to understand the principles involved in six sigma. They must be able to communicate effectively with both the people below them as well as those in upper management.

The Master Black Belt will take things a step further. They are the ones at the top of the leadership role when it comes to six sigma projects. These are people who want to be in charge of a project. They want to be the ones who discover where problems lie, and they want to be able to do something about them. They have to want to help others be a part of the solutions that they have discovered, and they must be very knowledgeable in statistics.

The Heart Of The Six Sigma Curriculum: Leadership.

Posted by George
Jun 01 2011

Although Six Sigma certification is a valuable asset, it's possible to learn the basic of Six Sigma online for free. Six Sigma is a highly marketable skill, and if you have a decent grasp of the system, you will become an attractive asset to any Today, we're going to cover the basics of the Six Sigma curriculum, as a guide to help you in your quest. One of the building blocks of Six Sigma is leadership. Starting at the very top, executives and partners can use Six Sigma principles to expand their vision and help communicate that vision to their subordinates.

six sigma leadership Further down the line, assigning Six Sigma champions requires a keen understanding of leadership, and how to identify good leadership in others. Unfortunately, many business courses cover the basics of leadership, without introducing a definite methodolgy for choosing the best personnel for each project. So how can you ensure that you have the right tools to be a good leader and choose the right heads for projects? According to serious research, Six Sigma Black Belts score higher on leadership assessments than those without Six Sigma training. Therefore, we may infer that leadership skills should be the core of any Six Sigma curriculum. One of the key concepts of Six Sigma is something called "transformational leadership." This is a style of leadership that goes beyond motivating followers for immediate results, although that's certainly a part of it.

Transformational leadership is a way of cultivating leadership in followers, in a way that makes each team member a catalyst for reducing variation and defect--whether they've had formal Six Sigma training or not. Research shows that transformational leadership can consistently improve company profits and customer satisfaction. In order to show that this concept is concrete and understandable, we can break it down into three components: inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration. Inspirational motivation is what a leader uses to bring their group together, and spur them to greater accomplishments. Intellectual stimulation is a way of framing potentially dull tasks as part of an exciting business endeavor. Individual consideration is a process whereby a manager makes each member of the team feel cherished, and that they have a personal stake in the project's success. The Six Sigma curriculum is quite broad, and we can't list every part of it here. But it's safe to say that leadership is the heart and soul of any successful Six Sigma training program.

Critical Success Factors

Posted by George
May 27 2011

A business philosophy and analytical methodology invented by Motorola in 1986 took the company to new stratospheric heights in terms of achievement. This program is called Six Sigma. It is a strongly data-driven, quantitative approach to quality control. Businesses around the world have used Six Sigma to reform their quality control efforts and increase their profitability dramatically.

success factors Six Sigma works by identifying and decreasing the incidence of defects within a product or service. A defect is defined as a product or service failing to meet customer requirements in some way. Defects occur within the context of opportunities. An opportunity is the total number of chances for a defect to occur during production. Motorola engineers decided to achieve a staggering level of quality by setting the goal of Six Sigma to result in only 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

Not all companies have automatically prospered as a result of Six Sigma. For Six Sigma to work, some critical factors must be in place. These factors set the overall context of the company. Six Sigma takes advantage of the right context in order to work. Here are three factors that are necessary for Six Sigma to be applied.

Executive Engagement

This is an essential component of a successful Six Sigma strategy. Six Sigma demands data-driven approaches at all levels of decision-making. This means that executives have to be engaged with their employees and managers. Feedback loops are essential to the Six Sigma process, and communication between executives and their subordinates is crucial to achieve Six Sigma quality. The role of the executive within the context of Six Sigma is to define and achieve organizational goals. Creating accountability between employees and delegating responsibilities to different groups help keep the company running smoothly.

Communication

The human resources department must be brought in when introducing Six Sigma. An overall increase in communication between all members of the company is essential to this program. Achieving a goal must be analyzed and communicated to the rest of the company.

Projects

Six Sigma defines success in terms of completing specific projects. These are quantitatively determined and analyzed to come up with an optimum level of performance for some variable. Six Sigma excels at producing prodigious amounts of data that can be analyzed to discover a variety of solutions. Creating individual projects breaks large goals into smaller pieces.

Degrees of six sigma certification

Posted by George
May 23 2011

Six sigma is a business strategy that seeks to improve upon the company’s business practices. The purpose is to increase productivity, lower production costs and to increase profits. The six sigma methodologies achieve these lofty goals by setting the company’s infrastructure on a hierarchy. At each level, employees earn a different certification with the names of yellow belt, green belt, black belt and master black belt.

The first and lowest certification level for six sigma is the yellow belt. This course is for people who have no concept of what six sigma is. The purpose of this course is to teach students a general overview of six sigma and some of the management skills that are needed to realize six sigma goals. These courses are excellent for those currently studying for college business degrees.

The next level is the six sigma green belt. A good candidate for this certification program is someone who enjoys being a part of a team, but also likes to branch out and perform some leadership duties. As a green belt, employees have the opportunity to be leaders and mentors to their yellow belts and other people that work on their projects. Green belt certification is good for anyone who has the desire to move into upper management positions in the future.

After the green belt is the black belt. As a black belt, employees need to be prepared to devote themselves full time to six sigma, as they will be in charge of executing only six sigma projects. They will be the team leaders that recognize which team member is best at which duty and they assign tasks to everyone accordingly. Anyone who is thinking of becoming certified as a black belt needs to have the ambition of being a part of upper management.

The highest level of six sigma certification belongs to the master black belt. Master black belts need to become certified black belts before they can move on to the master black belt certification program; they also may be identified by upper management as people who would do well in the master black belt program. They are the ones who mentor black belts and green belts and are considered to be full time coaches in companies that execute six sigma principles. The master black belt certification program is an excellent way for people to move from middle management to upper management within their companies.

Time And Money Saving Tips Every Company Should Know About

Posted by George
Apr 29 2011

Time is money or so the saying goes and when you are running your own business you need to focus your energy on making the most of the resources you have at your disposal.  Many companies don’t allocate resources in the best way possible, thus they struggle with keeping their businesses above water.  Even the best ideas need to be formulated into good solid business practices for the best overall results.

Lean Business The following are some of the things that every business manager and owner should consider in order to run a leaner and more effective business.  Although intended to serve as only a guideline most businesses can find ways to implement these concepts into their current business strategies to produce better results.

To begin with it is helpful that if you are looking to reduce expenditures that you cut back on the number of employees that you have working for you.  Unfortunately, most companies don’t like to reduce their workforce because it will leave employees without jobs.  Hopefully, you only have top employees working for you and thus there is little excess.  Some ways to reduce your workforce but still keep everyone employed is to implement job sharing which will keep everyone employed but will help to reduce the number of hours you are paying employees for.  Ultimately, having the hardest working employees working at maximum capacity is always the best way to go and will not only be more efficient but more cost effective as well.

Reducing the cost of the product you are creating or the service you are providing is another way to help your business save some money, however, this type of change must be carefully thought out and implemented.  Rushing to reduce overhead without a clear picture of what the outcome will be on the customer’s end can be disastrous.  This will only help to improve your business and increase your profits if you are not doing so by sacrificing quality.

Cutting back on the number of hours your business is actually opened is another way to help save both time and money which can result in greater profitability for your business.  One way in which businesses are successfully accomplishing this these days is by adding an internet or self service component for the time when employees are not in the office or manning the business.

There are many companies implementing Six Sigma strategies into their business structure and one of the primary reasons for this is very simple. These strategies have been proven to work over and over again for some of the biggest companies in the world and as a result many other companies are hopping on the band wagon.

Six sigma process Some companies will inevitably try to take the easy and inexpensive way out and will try to implement Six Sigma strategies simply by reading a few books. While books on Six Sigma can be very helpful to learn more about the concepts that are involved they are in no way meant to be a replacement for Six Sigma training. The training is an invaluable part of learning all the principles as well as learning how to put them into practical application.

This business initiative is something that is very beneficial for companies because it addresses three main target areas which are improving customer satisfaction, reducing cycle time and reducing deficits. These three areas are the key to Six Sigma success.

Even after the training process is over their will be coaches put in place to help your business achieve Six Sigma success and will help to train black belts as well as all other employees about their role in implementing this process on their level of the business. This is one of the things that you will get from the training that you can’t get from books but of course there are many benefits that you receive from actually doing the training like having the opportunities to pose questions and ask for clarification. These can be very valuable when learning about Six Sigma.

So read your books and do your homework but if you want to really learn Six Sigma and implement it correctly within your business then you need to make sure that you get every employee the training they need. There is no replacement for a Six Sigma training course.

When a person steps into a company that deploys the Six Sigma methodologies, it shows. From the moment that employee steps his foot in the door, he can tell the company in question is a worthy one, which has the ability to make their product better than the next one can. This employee also knows that by walking into a business that deploys Six Sigma, he will also become part of that team and become an active part of that Six Sigma Process. So, what does it mean to become part of Six Sigma and what will a Six Sigma candidate learn?

Yellow Belt

Six Sigma Certifications The Yellow Belt of Six Sigma is a level in which many who achieve it will go on to become Green and Black Belts in the future. The training process is very different for all involved and can be implemented online or by using formal learning methods. The specific method used depends on various factors such as if the person training is doing so on his own time or if he is doing so through a company who employs the Six Sigma method.

The process, no matter which method is used, will instill some basic knowledge in the trainee. This knowledge includes many of the basic technologies used for the improvement of production, reduction of process times and waste and the improvement in client satisfaction overall. Learning basic problem solving and gaining the ability to recognize and control the processes from which loss and waste results is only the beginning of the Yellow Belt training for Six Sigma. Learning the fundamentals of the methodologies then applying them come next. While the trainee works on mapping projects and taking on other small roles, he will study and learn enough to eventually achieve the yellow Belt Certification and go on to Green belt Studies.

Green Belt

The person who achieves the Green Belt is one who is functional in the Six Sigma methods and employs their knowledge of organization to the best of their abilities. Not only will the Green belt actively train using the ix Sigma methods for improving the business management and production process, but he will have a part in its active implementation within the organization. Ideally, this person will actively lead a quality control and improvement team within the organization and utilize hands on training. Because they are tasked with overall process and product improvement, the Green belt must prove his extensive and intimate knowledge of the processes.

Black Belt

Learning and becoming responsible for the process of implementation of projects involving the improvement of a business or a product is the main goal of the Black belt. Not only will he successfully implement DMAIC and DFSS projects, but he will also be adequately skilled in the implementation of all the tools involved with the Six Sigma processes and projects. Formal training combined with hands on training serve to educate the Black belt-to-be and when he has completed this training, he will complete an examination in which he must prove he is knowledgeable in the Six Sigma methodologies and implementation.

Whether a Black, Green or Yellow belt, all will receive more than sufficient training and education from higher leveled Belts, such as those whom have already achieved a Master’s Black Belt in addition to formal classroom training and/or online education. Additionally, in each stage of the process, the initiate into Six Sigma will pass an examination to show he has successfully learned and implemented all he knows to make Six Sigma a part of his life and management/employment processes on a day-to-day basis.
